NATURAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

I’m a wedding photographer based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK. I specialise in what you might call ‘natural wedding photography.' So what IS natural wedding photography, exactly?

For me, it’s about capturing moments that happen on their own without any direction from the photographer. It’s about being in the right place at the right time, always keeping my eyes open and developing a sixth sense for when something interesting is about to happen.

It’s about not having any pre-conceptions of what your wedding day will be like. It’s important to let a wedding day breathe and take on it’s own personality. Then making sure I’m there to capture the moments which make up your unique day and tell your story.

So that’s what good wedding photography is then?

Well to be honest, ‘good wedding photography’ is in the eye of the beholder. There are so many different approaches that there really is something for everyone. If you’re someone who values honesty and authenticity. Or if you’re someone who really embraces their own uniqueness as a person then natural style wedding photography is probably for you.

In my opinion this is the style of photography that really gets into who you are and what your wedding day was really like. I think that’s what’s most important when you look back at your wedding photos in the years to come.

Also from a more logistical standpoint… natural wedding photography is way less hassle for you. You can just get on with enjoying your wedding safe in the knowledge that your pictures will reflect what really happened on your day - whatever that might look like.

HOW DO you know you’re GETting GOOD NATURAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?

The main thing is to carefully look at your photographers portfolio before you book them. There are a lot of buzzwords in wedding photography. Many people will claim to be natural wedding photographers, documentary wedding photographers, reportage wedding photographers and more.

Look through the portfolio, look at as many pictures as you can. Are the photos obviously posed or set up? Nothing wrong with that but is that what you want? A good natural wedding photographer will have a strong portfolio of un-posed, documentary photographs. The type of moments matter as well. There shouldn’t just be endless pictures of guests stood holding a drink in the sun with a nice blurry background.

You should look for real moments that show the personality of the people in them.

TRUST YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

When you’ve found your perfect wedding photographer, you need to trust them if you want real, natural wedding photography. Any photographer should be happy to do some formal photos and portraits - that’s part of the job - but that shouldn’t be the main focus of the day. If you’ve found someone who knows what they’re doing then you should trust them to make use of their experience and talent to photograph your day in the most natural way possible. That’s the best way to get real, genuine, moments for you to look back on forever.
