Wedding Photography - Hugs

Milton Keynes Wedding Photographer

I love a good wedding hug. They happen a lot. Everyone is in high spirits. People often haven’t seen each other for a while. Maybe a few alcoholic beverages have been consumed. Love is in the air. A hug can pop up at any time. Part of the challenge of being a documentary wedding photographer is being able to predict when they’re going to happen. You’ll often see me lurking about, waiting for two people to collide.

It’s not easy to get it right either. You have to see it coming before it happens. Then you have to get there in time. Then you have to hope you’ve picked the right side or you might end up with a picture of an ear…

WEDDING HUGS

It’s great though. There’s something about the process of a hug. It’s like… you see two people notice each other, they smile, yep there they go, they’re on course. The arms wrap around and then there’s a sort of peak moment to get the picture - right at the end of the squeeze.

The apex of the hug. That’s right, hugs have an apex. They do now anyway.

When do the hugs happen?

They can happen any time, but they do tend to go a bit mental straight after the ceremony.

Everyone is on the congratulations hype-train and hugs are popping off everywhere.

Often the bride and groom will wait outside the ceremony venue and greet the guests as they leave the building, hugging one after another. At the point it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. It’s like a production line of huggy goodness.

WEDDING GUESTS HUGGING

YOU CANNOT HIDE - I WILL FIND YOU

I’m exaggerating a little bit, obviously. I won’t jump out at you in your living room if you hug your spouse. Weddings though… yeah, you’re fair game for being hunted down and papped.

I spotted Neil in the picture below hugging his dad from a fair old distance and quickly made my move. In and out in a matter of seconds. Which isn’t something you typically want to hear on your wedding day but in this case it’s a good thing.

I took this picture from very close up which I think adds to the intimacy. I didn’t interfere though, and I wasn’t there long enough for them to notice me or to disturb the moment.
